Tips For Berry Picking

We love going berry picking during the nice weather. It was something fun we always did with the kids, and it is nice to get out and pick berries, then go home and make some recipes with our fresh berries. However, it is good to plan ahead to make the most of your experience!

Plan ahead

Timing is key when it comes to berry picking. Look ahead of time to see when different berries are in season and what times they will be available for picking. Keep in mind that berries might be picked out quickly on a busy morning, so it may be good to get there early. Always call ahead or check websites ahead of time when possible.

Dress Appropriately

Berry picking can be messy, so dress accordingly. This is especially the case with kids! Make sure to dress them in clothing that is ok to get dirty or berry stains are not a concern. Opt for comfortable, breathable clothing that you don’t mind getting stained with berry juice. Long sleeves and pants can help protect your skin from scratches and insect bites, especially if you’re venturing into wild berry patches. Don’t forget to wear closed-toe shoes, as you may encounter uneven terrain or prickly plants. Younger kids can wear boots or other protective footwear.

Coolers & Containers

Bring containers with ample room to hold your berry haul. Opt for shallow containers to prevent berries from getting crushed. A cooler is usually a good idea, especially in warm weather, as the berries can spoil quickly.

Sun protection & hydration

Don’t forget to pack sun protection such as sunscreen, sunglasses, hat etc. to shield yourself from the sun’s rays during extended periods of berry picking. Kids may feel more comfortable in the hot sun if they are wearing a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun out of their eyes.

Stay hydrated and energized with plenty of water. Snacks are also a good idea, especially for kids.

Enjoy your berries!

After a berry-picking trip, enjoy your berries! We usually try to eat as many fresh berries as we can, and then try to use the rest immediately. We like to freeze any leftovers, and use berries in things like parfaits or pies.

These are great tips. If you’re picking blackberries, I would add bringing gloves. Those thorns are no joke!

I love picking berries. The first time I went, I was surprised at how ill prepared I was. There’s more prep to it than you’d think!

I love that you included sun protection and hydration. I grew up in the South, and we had berries everywhere. The thing about berries is that they love the sun. If you’re picking them, you’re also baking in direct sunlight!

I haven’t gone berry picking in years, but your advice about the juice and stains on your clothing is important to remember. You may have a tough time removing those stains.
