How to Make Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry syrup is a natural remedy known for having immune-boosting properties, especially during cold and flu season. It is easy to make at home with just a few ingredients. Here’s how you can make your own homemade elderberry syrup.

Note – never eat raw elderberries! Elderberries must be cooked to neutralize their naturally occurring toxins.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried organic elderberries (or 2 cups fresh elderberries)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 cinnamon stick (or 1 tsp ground cinnamon)
  • 1 tsp dried ginger (or a 2-inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced)
  • 3-4 whole cloves (or 1/4 tsp ground cloves)
  • 1 cup raw honey (adjust to taste) – I try to purchase local honey

I buy dried organic elderberries from Amazon. I make sure they are organic, and I usually buy a large bag so that I can make several batches.

Instructions

Prepare the Elderberries: If using fresh elderberries, rinse them thoroughly and remove any stems or debris. If using dried elderberries, ensure they are organic and free from contaminants.

Simmer the Ingredients: Combine the elderberries, water, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves in a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 45 minutes to an hour. The liquid should reduce by about half.

Strain the Mixture: Remove the pot from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. Use a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain the liquid into a bowl. Afterwards, press the berries to extract as much juice as possible. Compost (or throw out) the berries.

Add Honey: Once the liquid has cooled to a warm (not hot) temperature, stir in the honey until it is fully dissolved. Adding honey when the liquid is too hot can destroy its beneficial properties.

Store Your Syrup: Pour the elderberry syrup into a clean, airtight glass jar or bottle. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 months.

There is no standard dose for elderberry syrup, but you can take a tablespoon or two a day to help support a healthy immune system.
