How to Have a More Eco-Friendly Workday

A typical workday can generate a surprising amount of waste, from disposable coffee cups to paper use. Small changes can turn your ordinary routine into an eco-friendly workday. Here are some ways to green up your work day, whether at home or in the office.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Use efficient lighting such as LED lights, and always turn off lights when not in use. Try to use natural light when possible instead of lights. Indoor plants improve air quality and enhances productivity.

Enable dark mode on screens and lower brightness levels to save power. Power down electronics and unplug devices when not in use.

If you work from home, conserve energy for heating and cooling by throwing on a sweater, using blackout curtains to block heat, and so on.

If possible, carpool, walk, bike, or take public transportation.

Cut Down on Office Waste

Offices can generate a significant amount of waste. Start small by using a reusable water bottle, stainless straws, and a ceramic coffee mug.

Conserve paper any way that you can. Switch to digital notes instead of sticky notes. When printing is necessary, look for recycled paper try to utilize double-sided printing or printing multiple pages per sheet. Set up a recycling station for paper, plastics, and compost. Look for sustainable products, such as pens that use recycled plastic.

Eco-Friendly Meals and Drinks

Bring meals to work in reusable containers, and try to reduce single use packaging and materials. For example, use beeswax food wrap instead of plastic wrap. Compost any biodegradable food scraps. If your office does not have a compost bin, start one at home. Use reusable cups and mugs.

I work from home which helps. We only have led lights which really helps. When the weather is nice and sunny we get plenty of light so I don’t even put the lights on.

At my job we waste a ton of receipt paper. I wish we had a button where we can chose to print or not. It would save so much money. We just throw the used receipts in the trash.
