We recently had been hearing a lot about Dalgona Coffee, so we decided to give it a try. This is an easy homemade whipped coffee, and you can choose any kind of milk alternative.
This recipe requires only a few ingredients! You can use regular or decaf instant coffee.
To make the whipped foam, use equal parts of:
~ Instant Coffee
~ Sugar
~ Hot water
I use organic sugar that is free of bone char. I only recently learned about the process of using bone char for refined sugars (read about that here).
I usually use Zulka Morena Pure Cane Sugar. It is a more coarse sugar, but since we are mixing it with hot water, no worries about it dissolving. (This article also lists other bone char free sugars).
I have heard you can mix this by hand; however, my daughter tried that on our first attempt and it was a bit frustrating. We also tried a milk frother, which I use for so many things, but that also did not work.
I have a small hand mixer, and it works perfectly. We mix it right in a measuring cup. You could probably do it in a bowl, but I wanted something with higher sides so as not to make a big mess if it splatters.
Start by mixing your hot water, sugar, and instant coffee, until blended (at a lower speed).
Then, continue at a higher speed until the mixture thickens.
The whole process only takes a few minutes, and you are done when it has thickened up.
To prepare your beverage, all you need is:
~ vegan milk of your choice (approx. 1/2 cup)
~ ice (optional)
For this vegan version, we use coconut milk, but you can use whatever you prefer.
Simply spoon the whipped coffee on top of your milk.
Enjoy your drink! I either swirl the coffee with the milk, or drink with a straw, mixing as I go.
